She was probably the most loved princess of our time, and we all know she was a style icon, so it’s not surprising to hear that five of Princess Diana dresses sold at a recent auction in Los Angeles for an astonishing price. The 5 beautiful gowns that have belonged to Princess Diana were sold to nearly half a million dollars by Julien’s Auctions house, probably setting a new record for dress auctions.
The ivory evening dress designed by Zandra Rhodes specially for Lady Di from silk decorated with pearls has been worn by the princess back in 1987 at a gala held at the London Palladium and now it was auctioned for $100,000. But the star of the night (and unexpected surprise) was a gorgeous burgundy wool dress signed Caroline Charles which was sold for $125,000, even though it was initially estimated to fetch between $20,000 and $40,000.
The other three Princess Diana dresses sold were designed by Diana’s favorite dressmaker and really close friend, Catherine Walker. The dresses also were estimated to fetch between $40,000 and $60,000 before the auction and they’ve all been sold for a lot more: $75,000, $76,800 and $81,250 for the most expensive. The emerald silk dress for example has been worn by Princess Diana at a banquet held in honor of Pertuan Agong of Malaysia back in the fall of 1993 at the Dorchester Hotel in London.
What adds even more value to this dresses is the fact that they’ve been sold by the princess herself, just two days before she died in the tragic accident, to finance her foundation.
