The 2014 MTV VMAs took place last Sunday, on August 24 at the Forum in Inglewood, Californica and, as we all expected, good taste, elegance and the newest fashion trends were unleashed on the red carpet. Check out the 2014 MTV VMA red carpet looks and decide which stars were the best dressed and which stars did it wrong at one of the biggest events of this summer.
Still really popular after the 2014 Teen Choice Awards, crop tops appeared everywhere on the red carpet at the VMAs as well. This time Miley Cyrus chose an outfit from Alexandre Vauthier’s Fall 2014 Couture collection shining in a black leather crop top and leather pants. Also Victoria Justice went for a white Alice + Olivia tube top and a black high-low skirt. In the same trend was model Jourdan Dunn too, as she opted for a tiny tube top and a long skirt from Balmain Resort’s 2015 collection.
Extremely High Slits
2 years ago at the 2012 Academy Awards Angelina Jolie made waves with her red carpet outfit and since then many other stars raised their standards with other interpretations of the high slit. Rita Ora took it a bit too far with a Donna Karen Atelier red silk gown and also Jennifer Lopez’s slit was almost unwearable – a Charbel Zoe dress. The young Kylie Jenner went for a flowy black satin gown which was extremely elegant.
Pink pants were a also a good choice this time and Chloe Grace Moretz and her outfit were amazing, going for an embellished magenta top paired with a stylish pair of pink pants from the 2015 Louis Vuitton Resort Collection. Also Gwen Stefani chose to wear pink pants from her own L.A.M.B collection colored in pink and black.
Ever since she became a mother, Kim Kardashian went even further with her tops to highlight her sensuality. Her outfit at the 2014 MTV VMAs was one of the most risky things to wear, with a Balmain Resort 2015 dress and an attention grabbing deep cleavage. Demi Lovato also went for an extreme plunge, with her long-sleeved Lanvin gown that was definitely better than Kim’s outfit.
Even though it’s not as popular as it used to be, sheer paneling still seems a good choice for a summer outfit. Kendall Jenner opted to walk on the red carpet in a black jumpsuit with a sheer top and a simple black bra underneath while TV host Renee Bargh appeared in a traditional paneling. Also Alexandra Shipp went for a see through dress made of a mini and a very low, flared out and embroidered skirt.
Barely There Dresses
I think this was one of the worst outfits from the 2014 MTV VMAs, with Amber Rose going for a chain dress that barely covered anything, an outfit which took her to the attention grabbing extreme.
Making an impression on the 2014 MTV VMAs red carpet, Taylor Swift chose to wear a long-sleeved and very short bodysuit from Mary Katrantzou’s Resort 2015 collection while Charli XCX didn’t make anyone’s best dressed list and failed to impress us in a one-sleeved black and yellow bodysuit.
This time cutouts were definitely one of the 2014 MTV VMA red carpet trends and two of the most interesting outfits were worn by Iggy Azalea and the actress Holland Roden. The Australian singer opted for a silver dress from Atelier Versace’s Spring 2014 collection with very small cutouts at the center of the bodice, while Roden went for a white Milly dress to impress the audience.
Trying to reproduce Britney Spears and Justice Timberlake’s 2001 denim moment, Katy Parry and rapper Riff Raff definitely rocked the 2014 MTV VMAs red carpet wearing Versace ensembles with a lot of studding and beading. Also the singer Becky G opted for a skirt with way too much studding.
Sophisticated Black Dresses
Glamour still managed to find a place among the 2014 MTV VMA red carpet trends. Beyonce went for a stunning black sequined dress from Nicolas Jebran Couture, while Chanel Iman wore a Balmain woven leather dress. Nina Dobrev added a plus to the all black look with a gown from the Zuhair Murad Resort 2015 collection.
